SECRETS FROM THE VAULT WITH JARLINE ALMONTE
ON DUALITY & DEVOTION
1. What are your beauty holy grails?
I absolutely cannot live without my cherished MAC lipstick, my NYX brow pen, and my NYX lip liner in the shade “Munchies”. If it’s a day I’m rushing, I will use the lipstick and lip liner as eyeshadow, blush, and contour, and the brow pencil for brows and as a liner for my eyes.
2. What are your turn-ons and turn-offs?
My turn-ons are people with empathy, people with a strong sense of compassion, and people who are wholeheartedly themselves. I love listening to people teach me or tell me about something they care a lot about. I love people who can yap, because I’m not much of a talker unless I’m comfortable (which takes forever).
My turn-offs are people who are negative at any opportunity they can be, especially about other people. Everyone has bad days, but if the only things that come out of your mouth are negative—or that’s the only way you can bond with others—then I can’t be around that.
3. What’s your go-to routine on maintenance day?
I love oiling up my hair on wash day with some rosemary oil, and while it’s sitting on my scalp, I go and clean the house. Once I’m done cleaning, I’ll wash my hair with my Cécred shampoo and conditioner, do a Hello Kitty face mask, maybe paint for a bit. If I’m not in the mood, I’ll create my millionth Pinterest board or do some DJ mixing on my boyfriend’s Serato just for funsies.
4. What are you currently listening to?
The music I’ve been working on lately!!! If not that, then it’s Hiatus Kaiyote, A Tribe Called Quest, Common, and Stevie Wonder. But if I’m getting ready to go out, it’s always Cash Cobain, Wolfacejoeyy, Bay Swag, Tisakorean, old Lloyd, 112, or anything early 2000s R&B.
5. What brand partnership have you denied and why? 2025 is the year of transparency… so dish.
I’ve had to turn down partnerships if they didn’t feel like the right fit for me or didn’t line up with what I’m about. I started off so young, so I just wanted to be “easy” to work with. But the older I’ve gotten, the more I understand how important it is to only do what aligns with me, and to not be afraid to speak up if I don’t like something.
6. What was your first memory of GBY?
I think it was early 2019, and Ziggy gave me Courtney’s number to get a tooth gem at her hotel room in NYC (pre-GBY New York). It was so random, but I thought Courtney was the sweetest and absolutely hilarious. Once I moved to LA, it became my go-to spot for everything beauty-related I needed.
Not only do I love the brand, but I love the women behind it. Kendra and Courtney are incredible women, and I’m happy I got to meet them so early in my LA life.
7. What do you love to hate online?
I don’t think I necessarily love to hate anything, but I will say the brain rot videos come close. I know that it’s a product of our attention spans and sense of humor changing the more chronically online we are. And I know the younger generation is like this because of their exposure to social media at such an early age. But I genuinely think some of them are hilarious, and I will stop what I’m doing if it shows up on my feed to watch. Though I do wonder (and I’m a little afraid of) where humor is gonna be 10 years from now.
